What is a penile prosthesis?
The penile prosthesis is a definitive solution for erectile dysfunction. It is a mechanical device made up of cylinders that are biologically compatible with the body and especially with the penis. These cylinders replace by surgery the interior of the cavernous bodies of the penis, through which the erection is performed naturally by concentrating the blood inside. This prosthesis allows the penis to be flaccid or erect according to the patient’s will. The cylinders are connected to a small pump that is placed between the testicles. By means of a simple manipulation based on palpation of the pump, the erection is activated and deactivated.

When should it be implanted?
When the patient suffers from erectile dysfunction or impotence and has already carried out other types of treatment without success such as pharmacological therapy, low-intensity shock waves, injectables or cases requiring psychotherapy. In other words, the patient suffers from impotence or severe erectile dysfunction. We must consider the implantation of the penile prosthesis as the last option within the protocol of action.
What is the process of penile prosthesis implantation?
- Surgical intervention:
- General, spinal, or local anesthesia
- The maximum is 24 hours of hospitalization.
- Postoperative:
- Recovery in 1 week.
- Sexual life is resumed in 1 month.
What results are obtained with a penile prosthesis?
Penile implants are a mechanical means of creating an erection, but it must be taken into account that it does not stimulate the libido. That is to say, the sexual desire of the patient is not increased through the penile prosthesis. It is true that in many cases the confidence in patients with implants increases, and as a psychological result the sexual desire can also be positively affected.

Positive aspects for the implantation of a penile prosthesis
- Sensitivity is not affected.
- The orgasm is not affected, in many cases it is even more pleasant due to new sexual activity.
- Ejaculation is the same or in many cases greater, as sexual desire is regained and the sexual act itself is more pleasurable.
- The way you urinate is not affected at all.
It also has a high tolerance index and is one of the solutions of erectile dysfunction with a higher degree of satisfaction on the patient’ side.
Erectile dysfunction is caused by a lack of blood supply to the penis. Among other parts, the penis is made up of cavernous bodies which, when filled with blood after excitement, increase the size of the penis and harden it to make penetration possible during sexual intercourse. It should be noted here, that one of the greatest doubts of patients is whether the member loses size when wearing a penile implant, and the answer is no, it does not have to happen (as long as the appropriate sizes, models and supplements are chosen with patience and knowledge).

General anatomy of the penis
Erectile dysfunction can be the result of organic, neurological, endocrinological, vascular, psychological causes or diabetes.
